SPARKS II

2026. SHOWCASE, Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Hong Kong.

Sparks refers to the glow released by burning incense, as well as the enduring flame of Hong Kong’s traditional culture. The work brings together six traditional festivals in Hong Kong: Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon Dance, Shau Kei Wan Kwan Tai Festival, Yuen Long Shap Pat Heung Tin Hau Festival, Kam Tin Tai Ping Ching Chiu, and Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade, to form a sound map.

The sounds reconnect festivals across Hong Kong, carrying traces of faith, community, and cultural memory. The shape of each wooden panel is derived from the traces left on paper by burning incense, while paper-cut patterns depict scenes from different festivals. As traditions continue to transform with the changing times, how might we keep the roots of culture alive?
