In Confucian thought, “harmony” is dynamic and diverse; it is an ongoing process which may involve tensions and conflicts, aimed at achieving a more ideal state of coexistence.
The video captures streams, shifting weather, and various organisms interacting with the incense tree: worms eating its flowers and leaves, wasps feeding on seeds, and invasive plants growing nearby. According to natural laws, pest outbreaks are natural, and wasps aid seed dispersal. Without human interference, the incense tree will naturally recover. How do we measure “disharmonious” in the process of achieving harmony, and how do we assess the state of multi-species coexistence? Who is the arbiter, humans or nature?
